National Animal Hero Kids Awards
24 'Animal Hero Kids' Scholarship Prizes Matched by Miami Dolphin, Ricky Williams
Delray Beach, FL.-The first National Animal Hero Kids Awards on Friday, Dec. 17 at Sundy House in Delray Beach had a surprise guest.
Ricky Williams promises to match scholarships that went to youngsters from South Florida and other parts of the nation who displayed compassion and bravery to assist animals in danger. (See media article.)
Other special guests included Winnie, the three-legged dog rescued after she was beaten and stuffed into a sewer grate, and Mitzi, another dog assisted by Urban Trails, a halfway house whose residents help socialize dogs who have been abused or neglected.
The Animal Hero Kids are from Florida, Washington, Philadelphia
and Tennessee.
"If all of the animals these animal hero kids have saved and will save, could crowd into this room, there would be a sea of foxes, coyotes, sea turtles, dogs, orcas dolphins, chickens, cows, and pigs" said, Susan Hargreaves, HERO Founder.
Humane Educators
Reaching Out hosted the Awards at the vegan luncheon. Jane Goodall, Ingrid Newkirk and Jeff Burnside served as judges for the awards. HERO reaches 17,000 children and adults with free, interactive, humane education programs, annually, on a volunteer basis.
This year an anonymous donor came forward with $8,000 in scholarship prizes. "This is a first, there have never been this many individual stories of animal rescue in one room at one event concerning children and youth extending their hands to help animals in need" says, Susan Hargreaves, Founder of HERO.
Three children ranging from 8 -13 years old have, consistently, re-directed sea turtle hatchlings to their watery home away from the road's certain death, another 9 year old from Washington State has been fighting to re-unite, Lolita, a captive Orca with her family. Others have successfully, spoke against the horrific "sport" of fox penning where coyotes and foxes are torn apart, a practice that is- thanks in part to these Animal Hero Kids- banned now in Florida.
Winnie the very happy, three legged dog was reunited with her rescuers
at the event. When she was 8 months old she was beaten and stuffed
down a sewer grate, 7 children playing in their Miami neighborhood
came to Winnies rescue. There are more stories of other Animal Hero
Kids being awarded, a Philadelphia 13 year old veggie chef with her
own YouTube cooking show. A group from an Okeechobee County Halfway
House who socializes neglected and abused dogs will be bringing Mitzi,
one of the dogs they have helped.
"The recognition of children's compassionate, brave acts is a
powerful tool against bullying, apathy and plain old "meanness,"
says Susan Hargreaves, National Animal Hero Kids Awards Director.
